“ME, TOO. I wish I could come out there earlier. I feel like it’s such a long time away,” she said into my ear, as if reading my thoughts.

I closed my eyes. “Baby, I wish you could too.”

As much as I wanted to see her, however, we were still on high-alert with the Devil’s Rangers. Of course, we had plans for them, which is why Chuck needed to stay put until I was convinced it was safe. Things were tense. I almost felt like I was being followed now and the hell if I was going to risk putting her life in danger. With sneaky bastards like them, you couldn’t be too careful.

She yawned. “As much as I’d love to talk to you all night, I’m going to sleep. Call me tomorrow night. Like I said before, I don’t care what time it is.”

“I will,” I said softly. “Goodnight, Chuck.”

“Goodnight, Maddy.”

AFTER HANGING UP with her, I walked upstairs and peeked outside. Nobody seemed to be lurking outside and we’d stopped sending prospects over to guard the house at night. Frannie was staying over at Jessica and Jordan’s until her flight on Saturday. Regardless of what happened, she and Cheryl were taking their cruise and would be out of harm’s way. Tank had also arranged to have Slater, one of the other club members, and a prospect named Fish, on the same cruise. Slater was getting up there in age and needed a vacation anyway. Fish was in his mid-twenties and had a good head on his shoulders. He’d also served in the military and took his responsibilities seriously. I was already pushing for him to become a fully patched member, because I had so much respect for the guy. Tank was planning on trying to get him voted in after things settled down.

My cell phone went off, startling me.

It was Kathy.

“Hey, what’s up? Is everything okay,” I answered, sitting up. She never called me in the middle of the night.

“You never gave me the money for the tonsillectomy,” she said in a thick voice.

“I’ll pay for it once you’re billed,” I said. “You sure the insurance company isn’t paying for any of it?”

“Nope. It’s not covered.”

“I’ll call them tomorrow.”

“Who? The doctor?”

“No, the insurance company.”

“They’re not going to give you any information. It’s my policy and you’re not on it.”

I sighed. “Fine. Whatever. Just schedule the procedure and give me the date so that I can be there for the surgery.”

“They want payment first.”

“What?” I snapped. “That doesn’t make any sense. These places don’t work that way.”

“It’s thirty-five hundred dollars. Please, just give me the money and I’ll take care of everything.”

Something was definitely off. “What’s going on, Kathy?”

“Nothing.”

“Are you gambling again?”

She paused. “No.”

Her ‘no’ didn’t sound too convincing. “Dammit, you are aren’t you? Do you owe this money?”

I heard her begin to cry on the other end of the phone.

“Talk to me,” I said, trying not to lose my cool. I knew she used to have a problem, back when she was in her late teens.
